With summer coming just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about getting that sun kissed glowing complexion. We all want to look our summer best, but choosing the right path to the perfect tan can be daunting.
If you’re considering indoor tanning or spray tan there are some serious side effects to consider before deciding on the best solution for your bronzed complexion.
There are a lot of scary facts out there about the use of artificial tanning beds. For one, we’ve known for a long time it causes premature aging. Think about how your body is in a constant state of regenerating and replicating new cells. Tanned skin is dead, burnt skin, so the use of tanning beds leads to unhealthy regeneration causing premature signs of aging.
Tanning might seem like a quick and easy way to get that beautiful sun-kissed look, but the side effects are lifelong and dangerous. The Skin Cancer Foundation released updates stating that people who use tanning beds before the age of 35 increase their risk for melanoma skin cancer by 75%! In addition, a recent study found more skin cancer cases caused by indoor tanning then lung cancer caused by smoking. So, in the big picture, the side effects just aren’t worth it. What about spray tanning?
Spray tanning has been touted as one of the safest and most effective sunless tanning treatments for years. While the side effects are not nearly as dramatic as indoor tanning, the downside to a spray tan is found in the inhalation of toxic fumes.
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a key ingredient in giving you that golden glow. While it can be derived from natural ingredients, inhalation of this ingredient can result in genetic mutations and altered human DNA. This means DHA has the potential to cause lung cancer. In fact, spray tans are not cleared by the FDA. Use of DHA was approved back in the 1970s, but only in the form of lotions and creams where there was no risk of inhalation involved.
